More about Sophie

  • 3 years' experience

Hi, I’m Sophie! I’m a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), with a Master’s degree in Person-Centred Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My experience as a psychotherapist has been varied, working with spousal and parental bereavement, relationship issues, and navigating through difficult life events. I have also worked with survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, people with addictions, and with general and complex mental health issues – such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders.

I offer Person-Centred Therapy – a humanistic therapeutic approach that focuses on creating a warm, accepting, and authentic relationship between client and counsellor. As a person-centred therapist, it's my role to understand your experience from your perspective and why you are feeling the way that you do. I will facilitate your personal exploration of whatever you choose to bring to our sessions - and hold space for you when you need to process difficult emotions.

PCT aims to empower the client to be an active agent in their healing and growth. As such, sessions are non-directive - they are led by what you, the client, want to explore and work on. I do not set agendas or try to impose a direction on the discussion. This may be very different to other types of therapy you’ve done before, or to the picture of therapy you have in your mind. That freedom can feel overwhelming at first. It is completely ok to not know where to start, or to arrive at a session feeling like you have nothing to say – often that can prompt exploration in itself!

The strength of non-directive therapy is in its empowerment of the client, and its respect for your agency and dignity. Our sessions are your safe space to say what you want, feel what you want – without judgement or censure.

PCT is an exploratory style of therapy which focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of distress. It may not be a suitable modality for you if you are looking for a therapist to teach you techniques or coping strategies, or if you are solely interested in symptom management. Likewise, the non-directivity of PCT may not be a good fit for you if you are looking to be directed or advised by your therapist. I am very happy to discuss any concerns you may have either before or during our first session to work out if we are a good match. No one type of therapy works for all people - and my priority is always to ensure you get the support you need.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.
