I cannot recommend Valerie Harmer highly enough. From the very first session, she created a safe and supportive space where I felt truly heard and understood. Her compassionate approach, combined with her deep insight, has helped me navigate some of the most challenging moments in my life and accept my emotions. Valerie has a unique ability to balance empathy with practical guidance. She encourages self-reflection in a way that is both empowering and constructive, always offering thoughtful perspectives that help me see situations more clearly. She helped me recognise patterns, gain confidence in my own emotional awareness, and take meaningful steps toward personal growth. While doing so, she never just served a solution, but made me think of one by myself to understand the approach. What I appreciate most about Valerie is her unwavering support and honesty. She challenges unhelpful thought patterns with kindness and wisdom, providing tools to manage emotions and stress more effectively. Her encouragement has been instrumental in my journey toward self-acceptance and healing. From the very first moment and even before our first session she provided me with tools to help me in extreme anxious situations. If you are looking for a therapist who is compassionate, insightful, and genuinely invested in your well-being, I wholeheartedly recommend Valerie. Her guidance has made a lasting impact on my life, and I am deeply grateful for her support. I view life in a different perspective now thanks to her.

My name is Val Harmer and as a Solution Focused Therapist my role is to help you make sense of why you are struggling and to help you understand what may have caused the problem and what is keeping it going. Whilst I can’t wave a magic wand I can help you to see why you may be getting stuck and what might need to change for you to move forward and get back on track. Solution Focused therapy is collaborative, we work together to identify and make the changes needed to help break unhelpful cycles of behaviour. Therapy sessions are confidential and you can trust me to fully listen to you without judgment. I will ask you a lot of questions, so that we can really become aware of all of the different parts of your problem and you can count on me to give you respectful feedback and guidance about your situation.

I work with a wide range of emotional problems and mental health difficulties like anxiety, low self esteem, anger, ocd, phobias, depression, bereavement and relationship issues. My approach is pragmatic and change focused and I offer both brief and longer term work depending on your goals for therapy. using a combination of Solution Focused therapies like BA (Behavioural Activation), CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), SFBT (Solution Focused Brief Therapy) and SFH (Solution Focused Hypnotherapy). Study and qualifications - over the past 9 years I have studied Counselling and CBT Psychotherapy to Post Graduate Level at the University of South Wales, completed a Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy at the Clifton Practice in Bristol and trained as a Bereavement Counsellor with CRUSE.

As a member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) I abide by their code of conduct and guidelines for clinical practice. This includes regular supervision of my practice, and a commitment to continuing and updating my professional development.

Online counseling, sometimes called teletherapy, refers to talk therapy delivered remotely through digital platforms, such as video calls, phone calls, or chat. It can be a great option for people who face barriers to traditional face-to-face therapy, such as those living in remote areas, individuals with mobility issues, or people with busy schedules that make it difficult to attend in-person sessions.

Teletherapy also offers greater convenience and flexibility, allowing clients to access care from the comfort of their homes. Research shows that the treatment outcomes with online counseling are often just as effective as with traditional therapy, providing a viable alternative for individuals seeking mental health support.

Reviewed April 2024

I can't say enough good things about Val! When I came to her I had lost all my confidence and was constantly anxious and self-doubting. After my sessions with her I feel like a different person. I have begun to see that I was standing in my own way and now I feel I have tools to use if and when I start to feel anxious again. Val is so warm and nurturing - she is exactly what I needed as she is so easy to talk to and I felt able to open up. This was my first experience of therapy and I am so glad I was matched with Val on Better Help.
