More about Richard

  • 25 years' experience

  • BACP

I am a psychological therapist, registered and accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and a Senior Accredited personal Development Coach with the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC) . I have 25 years of experience working in private practice, the English National Health Service (NHS), and in Higher Educational counselling services. I have worked with a range of adult clients, of all ages, diverse cultural backgrounds, and gender identities.

I have developed into the therapist I am through working in NHS primary care mental health services in Merseyside and London, and in Higher Educational Counselling Services at University of Liverpool, and University of Chester. When working with me, the focus is on emotional well-being, problems, and functioning as opposed to (but not excluding) diagnosis of mental illnesses i.e., anxiety and depression. I work from a pluralistic perspective, embracing psychotherapeutic knowledge and interventions across the humanistic/medicalised spectrum, drawing on and utilising my professional knowledge and experiences.

If you choose to work with me in addressing your problem, we will work collaboratively, agreeing an approach to that work, and will have an expectation of an outcome. Psychological therapies, despite what some might suggest, do not provide an absolute assurance of a successful outcome. I do not set expectations around cures, and recovery. I pragmatically accept that life will challenge us all at varying times and that it is how we respond to those challenges that define the quality of our wellbeing and mental health.

Our work will often be grouped into four session blocks, reviewing progress and outcome along the way but committing to a focused review on each fourth session. In this way, I hope to empower you to use the knowledge and insight you gain, in order that you have agency and can consider your options as circumstances change, making choice about how you wish to progress. That may mean that you choose to take a break from therapy, move to another therapist, or that you have achieved the outcome you looked for. Our work together can be over the short, medium, or long terms. It is a working collaboration between two adults and in that sense, we can discuss your aspirations and how best to move forward.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.
