Hi -- I'm John Checkett (pronounced as in, Check it out!), a highly educated therapist holding degrees in several of the social sciences. I'm the first man in history to earn a master's degree in Women's Studies in Florida, an academic discipline which I have also taught on a university level. I also hold university degrees in communication arts and social work, as well as being an LCSW. I've worked in emergency screening, providing spot analysis for emergency mental health cases with no advance notice. I have also worked for years in the prison system, with inmates experiencing mental health difficulties. I'm an excellent listener and communicator, and I specialize in problems related to gender, problems between couples -- which are usually matters of communication -- and social justice. I employ an integrative approach, drawing especially upon cognitive behavioral therapy, Jungian and narrative therapy, addressing such matters as self-care, empowerment, self image, self esteem and conflict resolution.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

Professor Checkett is great at listening to me and getting to the bottom of what I'm feeling. He's supportive of me but also helps to ground my thoughts in reality and gives me insight into why I'm feeling how I feel. He checks my negative thoughts with active exploration, which is a habit I continue to follow outside of sessions.

I’ve never felt lesser. He makes, what I feel might be an awkward conversation or topic, be ok. He has helped me overcome myself. He has given me structure and techniques to handle my particular situation. He is my safe space to talk and discuss openly. I would highly recommend Prof. Checkett to anyone.

Prof. Checkett is great! I would 100% recommend him! I come to him to vent about my current relationship. He is so knowledgeable about different topics. He often recommends differs books, websites, and other tools to do out of session. His guidance has helped me to discover why I do the things I do. I know I’m in a healthier place. I’m not as anxious as I was. I feel more in control of my emotions. I also know more of what I want. Reminder, YOU have to do the work for yourself. But Prof Checkett really helps guide you along the way.

Prof. Checkett is fantastic. He listens, he really listens, he is patient, and he is funny. He really understands what my concerns are and helps me move forward from them. Some sessions we talk about what we talked about last time, some sessions we talk about something completely new, just to give me some processing time. He has a great sense of humor, and is open to just spending a session, talking about all sorts of random things. Some days that’s all I really need and I appreciate that he lets me do that. He doesn’t push unnecessarily. I highly recommend Prof. Checkett to anyone looking for a straight-talking, easy-going therapist.

As a therapy “lifer”, I am used to therapy going on for years at a time with no specific goal. I came here to work on one very specific thing. As it happens, BetterHelp knew what I needed even though I used an entirely different set of words. Prof. Checkett understood my concerns better than I did. It felt like he was always 3 steps ahead of me. Instead of playing catch up with lots of questions, Dr. Checkett educated me. Questions are important. In this case, I was blown away by how helpful our session was. Normally , I leave therapy exhausted and with a headache. However, I finished our session feeling energized, motivated and optimistic.

I would like to Thank Prof. Checkett for all valuable advise, exercises and most importantly teaching me how to say No. I am a victim of Hurricane Ian where me and my family with all horses, cows, pigs and dogs were partially destroyed by tornado, flooding and wind. Been a first generation farmer it was devastating to loose many animals who we loved and cared for so much. Prof. Checkett took his time to carefully evaluated the situation and without overstepping the boundaries making very valuable suggestions on my physicall health, business scheduling, personal relationship and helped to create step by step plan to move forward from financial, emotional, physical disaster we have been put through. Thank you!
