More about Kristen

  • 5 years' experience

Welcome, and thank you for considering working with me! My name is Kristen and I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia. I have had over 5 years experience working in the mental health field. I have worked in a variety of settings including in-home, hospital, private office and running an outpatient day program for severe mental illness. I have had experience working with a broad range and severity of clinical issues. I have the most experience working with anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), low-self esteem, depression, anger management, family conflict, relationship conflicts, and self-esteem. I also have experience working with intellectual/developmental disabilities and mild autism. I pride myself on creating an environment for my clients that is upbeat, positive and supportive.

I love helping clients boost their self-esteem, and increase their quality of life. My dedication to the field of mental health stems from my lifelong passion for helping others. I have always been the friend that people turned to for a listening ear or advice, so I took my natural gifts of emotional support and I went to school to sharpen my skills, learn proven techniques, and become a counselor. I understand that having mental health concerns can be difficult. There is still so much stigma around having mental health issues, which prevents many people from seeking help, so I work to show people that seeking assistance is healthy and should be the norm. The process for getting help can sometimes be overwhelming, and it can feel frustrating and lonely. However, I also know from experience how much life can change for the better when you find support and take steps towards taking care of yourself!

I feel that building rapport is the most important factor to successful counseling. I offer a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to share their stories, process their journey and gain the peace and achievements they seek. I use a person-centered, holistic, multicultural, and eclectic approach in treatment, meaning I begin where you are and tailor treatment approaches to your needs while being sensitive to how your own personal cultural identities and lifestyle choices impact your experience. I primarily use evidence based techniques including cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused counseling. However, I do incorporate more "classical" approaches to counseling as well. I would describe my style as warm and supportive, but I am ready to help you tackle your struggle head-on. Together we can work on establishing goals and steps for you to help overcome your current problems.

I look forward to speaking with you!

Kristen is a superhero. She is so supportive and creates such a safe place for you to share your thoughts and feelings shamelessly. I love how real she is and that she’ll give it to you straight. I’ve been seeing her for almost a year now and she has helped me with giving me tools to ease my anxiety and become more confident in myself.

Kristen is kind, funny, and straightforward, qualities I always look for in a therapist but don't always find. As a woman of color, it's also been hard to find available therapists of color in my area, so it means a lot to be able to work with her.

I have been working with Kristen for almost a year now, and the change is real. I was not sleeping, my anxiety was through the roof and I was having panic attacks every other week. Kristen has been a safe place, and has given me incredibly practical tools that have made big changes in my life. She is always positive, always showering the self love when i struggle to find it, and keeping me grounded. Talking to Kristen is like talking to a best friend who is consistently rooting for you, and I always leave her sessions feeling better.

Kristen simply "gets me". She understands at any given moment how I'm feeling, what is troubling me, what I'm thinking. She is always able to give me the proper tools to work on my issues and ease my fears. She is very professional while at the same time makes you feel very comfortable like you're talking to a good friend.

I haven’t been in counselling via BetterHelp for long, and I haven’t taken advantage of all it has to offer just yet. That’s because of my own anxieties and nothing to do with BetterHelp or with Kristen. Kristen immediately made me feel so comfortable when I expressed this to her, and she’s easy to talk to even if I’m just sharing a journal entry. It’s like talking to a friend and that’s one of the best things about it for me. I look forward to talking to Kristen more and I feel like I have someone here with me and that to me is priceless.

It’s early days yet although so far, I’ve been really comfortable and pleased with Kristen. I’ve had a counsellor previously and it wasn’t a great experience so I’m excited to see what Kristen and I can achieve together! I truly feel as though she cares about me and how I’m feeling.

We’ve had 2 sessions together, but Kristen Barrett makes me feel so comfortable - like you’re just talking to a bestie. She calls you out when needed and praises you till you don’t wanna hear it anymore. I love her.

Reviewed January 2020

Kristen is amazing at the ways she finds to motivate me and make me feel better. She is the person that everyone wants and needs in their life - she is giving you what your friends and family should be giving you but sometimes for some reason or another they don't. I feel like I made a massive progress since I started working with her and that's the only counsellor that for the first time manage to help me. She is such a good motivator and every time I talk to her my problems and concerns seem small.
