Hello and welcome to BetterHelp! I am so glad you are reaching out for support, and I am hopeful that if we work together, we can help you reach whatever goals you set! It takes a lot of trust to enter into a therapeutic relationship with someone, and I am honored to be a confidential, non-judgmental, and supportive therapist for my clients.

My name is Carissa Cullumber, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board Approved Supervisor in the state of Texas. I graduated with my Master's in Social Work in 2008 from Indianapolis University-Purdue University of Indianapolis. I have been fortunate to work with a wide range of populations and issues over my career as a Clinical Social Worker. I am trained in EMDR and nationally certified in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as most of my career I have been a therapist for children, teens, and adults impacted by sexual abuse, domestic violence, and physical and emotional abuse and neglect. My background has allowed me the unique perspective to provide therapy to both offenders of these abuses as well as the victims, which I feel sets me apart from others that have only worked on one side of these issues. In practice, I want to partner with my clients to identify the goals they are most motivated to work toward, and provide them with the skills and education to meet those goals. I utilize a strengths-based perspective with clients, meaning I believe clients already possess positive qualities and abilities within themselves, we just need to look for them and dust them off sometimes. I am strongly grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing modalities when helping clients make changes in their lives. I have spent a great deal of time working with family dynamics, couples/relationship issues, depression, anxiety/panic attacks, trauma, LGTBQ+ issues, gender dysphoria, attachment and family of origin issues, dissociation and Dissociative Identity Disorder, major life changes (grief/loss, divorce, etc.), and personality disorders.

Outside of my work as a therapist, I enjoy spending time working out with my bootcamp buddies, attending a wide range of concerts and musicals, and traveling to places with beautiful hiking trails.

Carissa Cullumber is an amazing Therapist, she has taught me more tools to handle my mental challenges in the last eight months than anyone else has taught me in ten years. She listens and respects how I feel and explains why I feel and react a certain way. Her kind words always calm me down and make me look at things in a different way, not always seeing the negative . She has taught me to see things for how they are and realize it is to feel a certain way, I would recommend Carissa Cullumber she is amazing.

Ms. Carissa has been a life saver. I was going through a major depressive phase in medical school, suffering from burnout, and felt very overwhelmed and lost. She has truly helped me cope and analyze situations one step at a time and that made a world of difference.

Not much to say besides the fact Carissa basically saved my sanity. I could go on and on about all of her great qualities as a therapist but we’d be here all day. She’s amazing hands down.

Reviewed July 2022

She listens and hears what I have to say. She isn’t afraid to let me know what she thinks.

When you feel like you’re drowning and no one can ever possibly understand, here come Carissa with a light. A light that she doesn’t force onto you to see but holds for you until you’re ready. Carissa listens and gives advice and understanding that helps you to see how to process your emotions. She doesn’t tell you “well that’s not the right way to look at it, do this instead “, she will give you advice you can use for that situation but also for possible future situations. Talking to her, I’d like talking to a friend. Someone you can trust, someone that makes you feel like you matter, someone that makes you feel heard.

She takes her time to send a thoughtful response and gives me encouragement to be active in different aspects of my life I was blocking.
