I’ve only had two sessions so far. But I feel like she really understands what my concerns are. She listens and she engages and lets me just ramble about how I’m feeling. She’s been absolutely amazing.

More about Sylvia

  • 7 years' experience
  • Female
  • LPC

My name is Sylvia Akingbade, and I am a licensed professional counselor in Texas. I have been in the mental health field for over 7 years. I have worked with children, adults, and those that are elderly or disabled. Over the years, as I sat with these individuals each day, I realized that we all need someone to process situations as we all experience life. I have come to accept that this is my purpose in life. I feel as long as we have that one person we can connect with, there is hope that we can overcome obstacles.

My approach combines cognitive behavior therapy and person-centered therapy. With cognitive behavior therapy, the process involves a collaboration between the client and the therapist. I use this method because it allows us to work together towards your goals. With person-centered therapy, it will enable the client to set the tone for the session so that you can get the best out of our sessions.

During all our sessions, I want you to know that this is a place where you can feel safe and free to speak as you wish. I believe in empowering each person to get and keep control over their lives. I want you to know that you are in charge of the therapy session, and I am just here to guide you. I feel like if we focus on you as a person, we will find out the problem. It takes a lot of courage to open this door, so I encourage you to be honest and continue walking through this door to get what you came here to learn.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

I am extremely happy with the therapy sessions I have with Sylvia. She is incredibly understanding and helpful. She offers support and great worksheets and exercises I can practice on my own. I definitely see a difference in my thought patterns since starting therapy and I can say that I have also gained more confidence in myself. I am extremely thankful for her support!

Sylvia is a wonderful and very gentle person. She has helped me so much during my time at BetterHelp. When I started my therapy with her I felt like I was spiralling uncontrollably and Sylvia was there to catch me. Anyone that gets Sylvia as their therapist is really lucky. Thank you for everything, Sylvia!

Throughout my sessions, Sylvia patiently listened to me process my thoughts and feelings while guiding me towards the core of my problems. She gave me the tools to address my problems and helped me develop the right mindset to change my habits. I’m still in progress myself but I believe Sylvia has helped me build a foundation to make changes with intention.

I really got a lot out of the sessions with Sylvia and I'm so grateful for her help. I'd never tried counselling before and I didn't know what to expect, or if it would help but I'm so glad I did. Sylvia is an excellent listener, very calming and reassuring. She's easy to speak to / open up to and I felt that she really understood me. She gave me the space to process what I was thinking and encouraged me to make the connections/find the answers myself. The worksheets she sent over between sessions were very thoughtfully chosen and meant that we could make good use of the time on our calls, as she'd already read the worksheet and thought about it in advance of the session. The worksheets she chose also helped me to continue processing what we'd spoken about afterwards, and I think because of this we were able to get to the root of what my problems were and start to deal with them fairly quickly. So in short, totally recommend... and I'm really glad I made this investment in myself! Thank you! :)

Sylvia put me at ease from our very first session and I felt listened to and heard, helping me to feel less anxious and able to move forward with things. I would highly recommend Sylvia as she is also always timely in her responses to messages and does her best to ensure your preferences are met regarding messages, calls or video chat.

Sylvia has been working with me a couple of weeks now. She brings an air of calm to a place where I find upset, anger and frustration. I have been able to open up further in just a couple of weeks with Sylvia than I have done previously. Sylvia listens intently takes time to acknowledge, note and be able to repeat back what is shared between you. There is no feeling of being just another ‘case’. I completely trust in Sylvia’s expertise as she has shown over and over through our communication how safe I am with her discussing all my personal thoughts and feelings in a place of no judgement. Sylvia is able to show understanding and encouragement without being forceful or invasive. I certainly have a high level of respect and would recommend Sylvia.

I would highly recommend Sylvia Akingbade (LPC) as a counselor; she had helped me dramatically when I was going through a challenging time in my life. She immediately was able to help me move in the right direction mentally, emotionally, and physically. She was able to point my issues and help me find solutions on how to solve them. Due to my busy schedule, I would message via the chat logs, and she always responded promptly. I am so grateful that BetterHelp paired me with someone so easy to communicate with and guide me in the right direction so quickly. My life and lifestyle have dramatically improved due to her expert guidance. Not only has she helped me, but she has to help me become a much better version of the person I had in mind, and a much better parent as well. I will forever be grateful to Sylvia for her expert guidance and counseling.
