More about Robert

  • 40 years' experience
  • Male
  • Psychologist

I am an experienced psychotherapist having devoted myself for over 40 years to this profession. While I was active duty in the US Army I earned a Master's Degree in Counseling from Boston University and have been a Minnesota State Board qualified Licensed Psychologist since 1992. For most of my life I've lived as fully as I could in the beautiful state of Minnesota with my wife, children and grandchildren.

My service has been with individuals, couples, families and groups in a variety of settings - in-office, school, residential and in family homes. I've helped people through grinding issues of anxiety, depression, anger, relationship problems, trauma, and chemical abuse. My professional emphasis is to partner with you to successfully meet your goals at your pace. You may expect me to continually work very hard to understand you and your situation, to clarify this with you, to develop and utilize whatever tools/strategies which may help in your circumstances, and to emphasize your successes and positive efforts. I employ directness and honesty with kindness, humility and humor. I hope to accompany you to a place where you are reasonably happy and able to function as you wish.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

I was matched with Robert during a time in my life when I felt that both my declining mental health and increasing anxiety were starting to damage my relationship with my partner. I also felt like there were so many barriers to me living a fulfilling life and feeling truly happy with myself. Robert was extremely easy to talk to right from the beginning. Having conversations with him helped me understand my own behaviors and identify the root problems of different challenges I was facing. I’ve put in some work and have noticed improvement in my life already, even if it’s only a little in some areas. I have more moments of happiness and appreciation for myself and the challenges that I have overcome. I completed 6-7 sessions with Robert and, although I’m now taking a break from therapy, I’m definitely interested in one day scheduling more sessions with Dr. Hinman.

I struggle with a few seemingly separate issues to do with anger management, occasional depression, general anxiety, and binge eating. Robert encouraged me to think about some of these things a little differently and come up with specific goals that I could make to convince myself that I was improving on all these fronts before I had a chance to convince myself that therapy wasn't helping. He encouraged me to seek medication for my anxiety, gave me constructive strategies for dealing with some of my long-term anger issues, and encouraged me just to get into better habits of taking care of myself. One particularly valuable insight was convincing me that some of the mindfulness that I'd been missing out on was literally right in front of me if I hadn't been so distracted by old patterns of rewarding myself in unhealthy ways. Ultimately, I found it very easy to talk about things with Robert. He and I seemed to communicate in very similar/compatible ways. I could quickly have a comfortable conversation about nearly any topic, but he was always quick to drag me back to something productive if I went off too far on a tangent.

When I first met Rob I was having panic attacks everyday, he encouraged me to see a doctor to discuss medication options. After a month I am on antidepressants and haven't had a panic attack since I started medication. We also have worked on cognitive behavioral therapy which has really helped me work on noticing and reframing my negative self talk. Thank you Rob!

Robert was instrumental in helping me rebuild the lost trust in my relationship by encouraging me to make a commitment to honesty. Through it all he never judged me for my actions. Talking with him regularly helped me stay on the right path. If I decide to seek counseling again in the future I will certainly be reconnecting with Robert.

Robert helped me through a time of my life where I was struggling with multiple frustrating, compounding stressors. I was getting more and more anxious, stressed-out, and irritable and it was causing me to lash out at those I loved around me as well as coping by drinking to cope. He gave me some tools to communicate more effectively with my wife, some considerations that made me more mindful, and some insight into my own neuroses that helped frame my problems in a more understandable way. I recommend him highly and cannot thank him enough for his help and understanding.

Robert gives clear, concrete advice and asks good questions. He approaches therapy from the ground up, choosing to focus on the fundemental elements of life like health and routine in order to tackle the problems on the surface.

Very professional and knows what he's talking about. He was very helpful in making me realize what I need to do and moving forward

Reviewed November 2020

As someone who was very hesitant about finding a counselor again, Robert was very respectful and gave me options and space to make my decision to work with him. Ever since then, Robert has been consistent and patient throughout our sessions. He is a great listener and will always wait to hear what you want to say. He is also observant and would catch the things I wasn't saying out loud. Robert never missed a beat. He can also be direct but in a way that was both sensitive and empathetic enough to not dwell but rather to lift you up and begin working on goals. After he would provide suggestions or food for thoughts, he always asked for me to provide my own feedback, which is what I always appreciated. Robert was both professional and personable, and knew how to use humor to gain a different perspective. The summaries he provided from our sessions have been helpful to reflect on and are great reminders. I walk away feeling more confident and honest with myself as I continue to challenge myself as Robert challenged me for the better. I would recommend him to anyone searching for a counselor.

Robert was really empathetic without making me feel coddled or pitied (something I’ve felt with other counselors). He had great strategies for me to manage the anxiety and depression I found maximized by a major breakup and the pandemic. I found the summaries he sent St the end of every session particularly helpful for me to reference later and to help me check my progress. I feel that he smoothly guided me through the work I wanted to achieve in therapy with a great sense of humor and rapport while knowing when to be serious and give plenty of space to express myself. I am ending therapy because I’ve reached my goals but feel confident that if I seek treatment again, I would reach out to him in a heartbeat. Thanks Robert for all your help and for providing a really comfortable space to open up and refind myself.

I signed up for Betterhelp to help sort out depression and related issues. Robert was immediately approachable. I could tell he genuinely cared for my well being and wanted to help me find a path forward. If anyone is looking for a down to earth, comforting human who wants to understand and help you as a person I strongly suggest spending some time with Robert.

Robert has been kind and encouraging throughout my online therapy journey, which I was not sure what to expect. The therapy sessions were comfortable, informative, and helpful - I barely noticed the physical distance! He provided me with a variety of tools to make progress and drive my personal growth, specifically targeted/focused journaling to track my progress and identify what is/is not working, mindfulness techniques, and reminding me that I am not alone in my struggles and that they are justified. I would refer anyone close to me to Robert, which means I definitely would suggest him to anyone seeking out therapy on BetterHelp. He had advice and suggestions for any topic I had on my mind and provided concrete points of improvement, which were very helpful to make actual change. I definitely appreciate Robert's input and will take a lot forward into my daily life.

Reviewed August 2020

Robert is a wonderful listener. He always made an effort to get to know me, my situation, and my goals before giving guidance or suggestions. For this reason, I end our conversations in a more relaxed, optimistic mindset than when we started. I would highly suggest Robert for anyone seeking some guidance and support in their life.

Reviewed July 2020

Robert is an incredibly understanding and supportive individual. I always felt comfortable talking with him, and his advice was always constructive and helpful for me and my situation. I would highly recommend him to just about anyone looking for professional help. 10/10 would therapy with him again. <3
