“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself”

-Jalaluddin Rumi

I admire your decision to pursue change and the courage to ask for help with the journey. Thank you for sharing some of your personal information and therefore let me take this opportunity to introduce myself.

My name is Glen Briggs and I am a New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I graduated from Syracuse University with a Master of Social Work degree and have over 30 years of experience practicing community behavioral health in Buffalo. I have counseled individuals with a myriad of problems, including the full range of mental health conditions and often these individuals have had concurrent addictions or physical health challenges. The people I have worked with come from a broad range of ethnic, geographic and economic backgrounds.

Working within the settings of mental health and addiction clinics, as well as a co-occurring continuing day treatment program; I have provided individual therapy, group counseling, psycho-educational groups, couples counseling, family therapy and crisis phone counseling. The utilization of online counseling in its various forms interests me as a new means to connect with individuals in need who may otherwise not seek therapy.

As you read through these various counselor profiles, you may find yourself overwhelmed by all the different therapies and approaches being described, leaving you to wonder what might be best for you. Research shows that therapy works and the particular type of therapy provided isn’t as important as what is called the “therapeutic alliance”. The therapeutic alliance refers to the quality and strength of the collaborative relationship between the client and therapist, where there is agreement on goals, methods to be used, the role of the therapist and preferences of the client. To use an analogy, there are many ways to get to your desired destination but the means of transportation you choose, depends on the preferences you find most important (ex. fastest route, most scenic, least hectic). So as you go about choosing a therapist, my recommendation would be to not get caught up on the theoretical orientation the person utilizes but focus more on how they like to conduct their therapy sessions, areas of interest and whether their communication style seems like it might be a good fit for you and the things you value most.

As one might expect of someone with over 30 years of experience, I have developed an eclectic approach to therapy with less reliance on theoretical concepts and more emphasis on solution-focused strategies that develop problem-solving and coping skills. While I draw a fair amount from Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, I elicit ongoing consumer feedback and collaboration, to inform the approaches to which the individual will be most responsive. I have been told that my non-judgmental style and use of humor, engages people, as they find me easy to relate to, respectful and sincere in my efforts to help individuals facilitate their desired change and improve their overall quality of life.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

Glen is patient, reliable, understanding, and has a jovial sense of humor in his practice. He never shies away from learning about an area new to him, and will consult with other counselors when he recognizes his own need to know more in order to offer the best treatment he can for his patients. Highly recommend.

Glen has been one of the best things that has happened to me in my adult life. He is extremely patient and understanding and always seems to understand my point of view. It’s been nice to talk to someone that gets me and to also have someone I can come to with any issues I’m facing, big or small. I feel like I finally have someone in my corner and in return, it has given me a boost of confidence. I can’t thank you enough, Glen! I’m glad our paths have crossed.

Glen is an amazing counselor that not only listen but takes great feedback as well. One thing to note, unlike some of the therapists I have interacted with, Glen is not burned out and feels full of energy. I feel rejuvenated after talking with him.

Reviewed June 2019

It took me a lot of time to accept the idea of trying therapy in the first place - 1) that I can seek help from someone else, 2) that it will take time, but 3) that it will strongly improve my life. Glen is very supportive, easy to talk to and it's great to know that every week you have someone who's on your side, as a reminder to put effort into improving your life.

I came to BetterHelp because I am a single mom of 2 young children and I own my own business. Making weekly scheduled appointments for myself is not a priority, but my mental health in managing all my responsibilities is! I didn't know if it would work, but I had no other choice- I just was not going! My depression was slowly not allowing me to leave my bed. I have to say, I was matched with Glen Briggs 1st, and it was a connection! The credentials and expertise is there. He understands me, remembers what I say... and if he doesn't all my notes are there I've written for him to review! When he writes back I respond in MY time. I have time to think about what he has said. I'm out of bed, back to work, and feeling strong. I will continue because I need that rock in my life so I don't fall back. Those words of encouragement and support don't come from a 6 and 9 year old, or my employees! The worksheets are a plus when you are not ready to talk or just want to answer questions... less work but informative. They tell you more about yourself as well. This is the only site I have tried and I highly recommend it.

Glen is thoughtful and insightful. He is always able to quickly identify the underlying issue I am facing in any situation, and he offers helpful advice to address those issues. He also promptly responds to my messages and always takes the time to send detailed replies. He has helped me improve my outlook and approach to my job, my marriage, and my parents. I have already recommended BetterHelp to several friends based on my extremely positive experience with Glen.

Glen is amazing. He is kind, compassionate, relatable, and attentive. We worked together for several months and he got me to a place where we both agreed it was in my best interest to discontinue our sessions. However, some intense and out of my hands life events have come up, and when I wanted help again, Glen quickly opened up time in his case load for me. He has decades of experience he brings to to table - both professional and personal - in order to form a true relationship with his clients. The Force is strong with this one!
