More about John

I enjoy working collaboratively and creatively with my clients. I am enthusiastic about the power of the therapeutic process and its ability to transform the human condition. Utilizing a holistic and eclectic approach, I primarily employ Client-Centered Therapy in counseling sessions and incorporate evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy along the way.

My 11 years of experience in clinical counseling has been influenced by a multicultural and social justice perspective and has involved helping children, adolescents, and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings to successfully address histories of trauma, depression and anxiety, concerns centered on identity and self-esteem, substance use and chemical dependence, crisis management, and interpersonal conflict among others.

The genuine and empathic posture I take in our work, along with the supportive, non-judgmental, and safer space I aim to offer you, will assist us in identifying your strengths and inner resources while examining the problems and distress you are experiencing. I endeavor to help you increase self-esteem, facilitate personal development, and evoke the discovery of answers and solutions necessary for your progress.

Additionally, I will aid you in cultivating greater insight and awareness through the exploration of your thoughts and feelings, guide you in creating effective strategies to manage the situations that have brought you to counseling, and promote movement toward healing and growth.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.

John is incredibly professional, caring, and helpful. He is so patient. Most notably, he is willing to make subtle changes when a particular technique or communication style isn’t as effective for me. I’m so glad to be working with him.

I look forward to every session I have with John. His main focus for our sessions long term and short term is to learn how I can live a richer and more fulfilling life. I appreciate that it’s not necessarily about finding the immediate answers, but rather looking at life and our journeys holistically. What I find the most helpful is his empathy and understanding of the layers and complexities that make up me, my upbringing, my issues and my desires in life. He understands racial and identity issues, which saves me a lot of time and energy to not have to exhaustingly explain. If you’re struggling today, I’m sure John can help you out!

I came to John after a truck plowed into our stationary SUV killing my husband and leaving me with broken bones and a brain injury. It was hard for me to think, speak, sleep, eat, and I felt stuck in a repeating loop in which I viewed the accident over and over. John helped me stop that fairly quickly, and we have worked for not quite a year on how to live with loss and injury, and he has been essential to my recovery.

Over the past several months, John has helped me work on my struggles with anxiety as well as helped me focus on building my confidence—finding better ways to speak to myself and understand my strengths rather than focusing on my weaknesses. After a few years of setbacks, it's great to have someone in your corner that approaches me with compassion while also speaking from experience. I've recommended him to friends of mine and look forward to continuing to work with him to establish better boundaries and expectations for myself as well as navigate future trials and triumphs with the tools he's given me.

I leave every conversation with John feeling absolutely refreshed, confident, and ready to continue thriving. He is very calm, very patient, and a very careful listener. He will really do a great job of finding the important pieces in why you say, and expand on them in a meaningful way. Things that will sort of slip out without thinking much of them, but when we explore them together a bit further, we come to revelations that help a ton.
