More about Vanessa

I am not doing enough.

I am not spending enough quality time with my partner.

I am not excelling enough at work.

I am not volunteering enough in my community.

I am not reading enough with my kids.

I am not making healthy enough meals.

I am not happy enough.

I am passionate about helping women break the “not enough” spell and working with them to find balance and contentment in their lives.

Women have never been asked to fulfill so many roles and do it so flawlessly. The pressure comes from cultural and social forces, our parents and well-meaning friends, and from that powerful voice inside us that whispers: “you are not enough”. Despite truly valuing our many roles, we can begin to feel unmoored by the constant demands on our time, energy, and body. It’s a complex experience and feelings can change day-to-day or even moment-to-moment. We can feel grateful and grounded in the morning and dissatisfied and racked with guilt by the afternoon. The weight of these contradictory emotions contributes to a sense of feeling inauthentic, lost, and disconnected from partners, friends, family – and most significantly – ourselves. Gradually, we try to fill the void with alcohol, food, sex, exercise, gossip, shopping or social media but all it leaves us is feeling unsatisfied.

You are not alone. Our work together will empower you to reconnect with your values, goals, and desires and to make decisions that are consistent with them. I believe you possess the strength and wisdom inside yourself to change. Our task will be to cultivate the self-awareness and skills necessary to live a more authentic, positive, and balanced life.

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” – Mahatma Ghandi

My therapeutic orientation is a combination of Humanistic and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. The humanistic approach emphasizes collaboration and building a strong relationship based on trust, compassion, and honesty. This foundation will help create a safe space for us to work through uncomfortable feelings and experiences. The CBT component gives us a framework to examine how “people, places and things” trigger thoughts and core beliefs and, in turn, influence behaviors.

A little bit about me: I hold a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Duke University and an MA in Mental Health Counseling from New York University. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (NY) and Licensed Professional Counselor (NJ). I have over 6 years of experience providing individual and substance abuse counseling. I am a wife and mother of two. Drinking was my avoiding/numbing technique of choice and changing my relationship with alcohol has been the hardest, best decision I have ever made. I love a good latte and a good book. I highly recommend Brene Brown for her insightful research, candid reflections, and fierce advocacy of self-acceptance. My favorite BB quote: “If we want to live and love with our whole hearts, and if we want to engage with the world from a place of worthiness, we have to talk about the things that get in the way - especially shame, fear and vulnerability.”

Online counseling allows you to receive care from a mental health practitioner via phone, video chat, or instant messaging. It is convenient for those who may have trouble getting to or would prefer not to have in-person therapy appointments. Starting at $65 per week, online counseling is generally more affordable than in-person counseling. A study by researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that online counseling can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy while being more convenient, affordable, and accessible.
